This role is a critical member of the Global Medical Affairs team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for development and implementation of high-impact strategic publications, physician-directed communications, medical education, and medical advocacy plans for company products. The ideal candidate will have significant leadership experience in the pharmaceutical industry, experience with scientific publications, and the ability to develop collaborative relationships with colleagues, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and medical societies alike.
 
The leader will engage with cross-functional partners including research, clinical, marketing, patient advocacy and medical affairs, as well as external authors and KOLs.  S/he will oversee the timely planning and execution of strategic message development, and planning and execution for medical advisory boards and medical education programs.  This role will requires the ability to interpret scientific/clinical data and help develop and communicate a compelling scientific platform and narrative for identified Spark products.
 
An understanding of medical communications planning for both marketed products as well as products in clinical development is crucial. Long-term budget planning and resource allocation skills are necessary, in addition to expertise in the rules and best practices governing medical education, publications, medical meeting and congress activities globally. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
60%      
  • Collaborate with R&D, Medical and Commercial partners on developing a Medical Communications plan that is supportive of strategic medical objectives.  Execute medical education programs, KOL engagement initiatives, scientific congress activities, and medical society outreach to gather insights, educate the medical community, and build advocacy for Spark development and launch activities.  Support scientific publication planning and delivery.

  • Develop forums and processes to communicate results and accomplishments to key stakeholders and to senior management

  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key opinion leaders, and our advocacy partners (professional and patient organizations)
20%      
  • Build strong collaborative relationships within the organization, and ensure visibility of Medical Affairs activities.  Manage direct reports as necessary

QUALIFICATIONS:
Individual should be innovative and enterprising, with a proven track record of success in leading the data dissemination and KOL engagement efforts of a global pharma or biotech organization. In addition, the individual will be a strategic partner with a unique understanding of the interplay between medical affairs, external medical stakeholders, and strategic business objectives. Leadership and technical capabilities are needed.  The successful candidate will also have excellent interpersonal communication skills along with problem-solving expertise.  This person must be independent, multi-tasked and results-oriented with a hands-on attitude in a fast-paced and energetic environment

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master’s Degree in Life Sciences required; Doctorate degree in Life Sciences preferred
  • Generally has 15+ years of experience in a  pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare organization. At least five years of specific Medical Communications, Medical Affairs and Medical Education experience.
  • Experience leading Medical Communication and/or Medical Education teams including defining functional objectives & priorities, functional budgets and people leadership
  • Strong communications skills (written and verbal); individual should be a skilled communicator and relationship-builder, who effectively networks internally and externally and represents the company and Medical Affairs in a professional and credible manner.
  • A proven ability to excel in a global matrix organization.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to coordinate complex deliverables & timelines across a wide array of internal and external stakeholders
